Island Grown Schools Seeds Unit: This unit is in Understanding by Design format, and is connected to both MA Standards and the goals of IGS. It can be used for a single lesson or a full-year unit, depending on the needs of your classroom. This unit guides students through the life cycle of plants, beginning with the seed. Categorized by season, the unit covers seed saving, sprouting seeds, taste testing, planting, and harvesting, to present the full seed-to-fork experience.

Plant Life Cycle Puzzle: Click here for photos and a template of the life cycle puzzle. This activity can be a fun, quick game, or it can be used as an extended project during which the students create their own puzzles, to then share with classmates to play. It can be made from 8.5 x 11 paper, or on larger poster board. We recommend laminating the puzzles to use throughout the year.

The Seed, by Aileen Fisher
How does it know,
This little seed,
If it is to grow
To a flower or weed,
If it is to be
A vine or shoot
Or grow to a tree
With a long deep root?
A seed is so small,
Where do you suppose
It stores up all
Of the things it knows?
